Latimer, invented a ‘water closet for railroad
cars’ and drafted the patent drawings for
Alexander Graham Bell's first telephone. In
1881, he devised a method for making a carbon
filament for a light bulb made by one of Thomas
Edison's competitors, and then supervised that
firm’s installation of electric lights in
several major cities.
Dr. Mae C. Jemison became the first woman of
color to go into space when she boarded the
space shuttle Endeavor, September 12, 1992, Dr.
Jemison was Science Mission Specialist (a NASA
first) on the STS-47 Space lab J flight, a
US/Japan joint mission
